Grizzl-E Classic 40A Level 2 EV Charger (J1772, NEMA 14-50)
Choose for: You plug in overnight and your car already handles any schedule you need
Check before buying: 40A maximum (no 48A hardwired version of the Classic)
For a J1772 car and an approved NEMA 14-50 outlet, choose Grizzl-E Classic if you want simple charging without an app. Choose ChargePoint Home Flex if charger-based schedules, reminders and combined home/public charging records would improve your routine. On the same suitable 240V, 50A circuit, configured for 40A, both deliver up to 9.6kW: Home Flex's higher hardwired rating does not make its plug-in version faster. The Home Flex installation guide restricts Canadian plug-in installation to a 50A circuit. This guide's smaller-circuit comparison is for the US.
Compare configured output. At 240V, the calculation is 240 × 40 ÷ 1,000 = 9.6kW. Your car's onboard charger can limit the rate below the station's ceiling. ChargePoint installation FAQ.
Best for simple charging: Grizzl-E Classic
Classic suits a routine that leaves any available scheduling to the car. Its manual describes plug-in charging without a user interface and a 40A factory setting; maximum current is configured with internal switches. Have an electrician confirm the appropriate limit for your outlet. Classic manual.

There is an official-page trap: the Classic page displays generic “Always connected” and “Schedule” promotional text, but its technical specification explicitly says “No Internet Connection.” Do not buy the app-free Classic expecting an app dashboard. Conflicting text on the Classic page.
Best for connected features: ChargePoint Home Flex
Home Flex earns its place when you will use schedules, plug-in reminders, remote starts or a combined record of home and public charging. ChargePoint also offers utility-rate guidance in the app; whether that helps depends on your electricity plan. You need a ChargePoint account to use the app with your home charger. App features and account requirements.
For the comparison configuration, choose CPH50-NEMA14-50-L23-K: J1772, the matching supply plug and a 23-foot cable. The ordering description calls the station 50A, but the same datasheet expressly limits NEMA models to 32A or 40A. Ordering table and electrical specifications.
Choose Home Flex on ChargePoint's site.
Setup and offline charging: the distinction that matters
Classic avoids connected setup. Home Flex's manual separates the electrician's current configuration in the Installer app from the homeowner's activation in the driver app. Confirm that both are complete at handover. Home Flex commissioning requirements.
A Wi-Fi outage is different from never activating the charger. ChargePoint says activation and connected features require Wi-Fi at the station, but a saved charging schedule continues if Wi-Fi goes down. Its installation FAQ separately says an electrician can configure current over Bluetooth without Wi-Fi. An unactivated or unconfigured Home Flex defaults to 16A. Offline behavior and default current, Bluetooth configuration FAQ.
If your car's schedule already suits you, Classic may cover the routine. Otherwise, Home Flex provides scheduling at the charger. Choose one place to manage it so you know which schedule to check.
What changes when Home Flex is hardwired?
The Classic manual allows hardwiring, but its output ceiling remains 40A. Home Flex supports 48A on a 60A circuit or 50A on a 70A circuit in its installation table; its FAQ quotes 11.5kW and 12kW at those settings and also lists an 80A circuit option for 50A output. Those are manufacturer reference configurations for an electrician, not instructions to change a breaker. Classic manual, Home Flex manual, output table.
Choose the higher-output route only if your vehicle can accept it and the installation supports it. Hardwired EV chargers need a licensed electrician and a permit where required. If your overnight routine is already covered by the matched plug-in output, prioritize controls and cable fit.
Variants: check both ends of the cable
Classic, Classic Connect and Smart are different products. Classic Connect offers Wi-Fi schedules, activity tracking and remote control, with J1772 and NACS options. Smart has its own Wi-Fi/app connection guide. Neither one's connected features establish what the app-free Classic can do. Classic Connect, Smart connection guide.
NEMA 14-50 and 6-50 describe the supply plug; J1772 and NACS describe the car connection. Both Classic and Home Flex offer those supply-plug choices. For a J1772 Home Flex and an approved 6-50 outlet, the order code is CPH50-NEMA6-50-L23-K, with the same plug-in ceiling. For a NACS car, compare the corresponding NACS Home Flex rather than assuming this Classic has a native NACS cable. Classic plug/connector specification, Home Flex order codes.

Cable reach, outdoor use and daily handling
Classic's cable length is unresolved across its official documents. The linked manual specifies 24 ft for GR1-14-24-XX; the current page says 25 ft. Home Flex specifies 23 ft. Get confirmation for the exact Classic unit if that extra reach decides the purchase. Classic manual, Classic page, Home Flex datasheet.
Measure the actual cable route to the port in your normal parking position, leaving slack, as ChargePoint's manual requires. Classic includes an EasyEvPlug holder and mounting kit; Home Flex includes installation hardware. Location and box contents, Classic contents.
Both publish outdoor enclosure ratings. ChargePoint recommends hardwiring for outdoor use and where plug-in GFCI requirements could create nuisance trips; ask the electrician to resolve local requirements. Outdoor and GFCI guidance.
For very cold locations, Home Flex's April 2025 datasheet says -22°F to 122°F, while its May 2026 installation manual says -40°F to 122°F for North America. Classic states -22°F to 122°F. Obtain written confirmation for the exact Home Flex unit before relying on the lower limit. Home Flex datasheet, manual, Classic specification.
Warranty and the complete order
Classic offers a 3-year replacement warranty, with a 5-year option; its manual excludes removal, installation and labor costs. Keep the original receipt. Home Flex publishes a 3-year parts warranty. These are not promises to cover every cost of a failed installation. Classic warranty FAQ, Classic manual, Home Flex warranty description.
For an existing outlet, budget for an electrician's assessment and any required work. For Home Flex, also check Wi-Fi coverage; an extender may be needed for connected activation. A NACS vehicle requires the appropriate vehicle connector or a confirmed compatible adapter. Pre-purchase guidance, Wi-Fi requirements.

App-free Classic, Classic Connect and Smart have different controls. Check the vehicle connector too.
Match the supply connection
Verify NEMA 14-50, NEMA 6-50 or hardwired against the electrician-approved plan; the Home Flex hardwired box has no supply plug.
Confirm the complete order
Check cable length, warranty option, included mounting parts and any separately needed adapter or Wi-Fi equipment before checking the current price.
ChargePoint does not sell supply plugs separately; buying its hardwired version for an existing outlet can mean an exchange. Before-you-buy FAQ.
How we choose
We compared official product pages, linked manuals, support FAQs and configuration tables, with supply plug, vehicle connector, circuit and current setting held equal first. We have not physically evaluated these chargers. The recommendations are editorial judgments about the documented features; cable flexibility, long-term reliability and real charging speed were not measured. Conflicting maker statements remain visible rather than becoming confident specifications. Our disclosure explains how purchases support thisWATT.
Verdict
Buy Grizzl-E Classic for a straightforward routine without a charger app. Buy Home Flex when its schedules, reminders and charging records solve a task you actually have. Their matched plug-in output is equal; Home Flex's higher ceiling matters only with a suitable hardwired installation and a car that can use it. Settle cable reach and installer eligibility before ordering.
Frequently asked questions
Is Grizzl-E or ChargePoint the better home charger?
Choose the non-connected Grizzl-E Classic when you want straightforward charging and already have any scheduling you need in your car. Choose ChargePoint Home Flex when charger-based schedules, reminders and home/public charging records would be useful. With both configured for 40A on a suitable 240V, 50A circuit, each supplies up to 9.6kW; the plug-in decision is chiefly about controls and fit.
Will ChargePoint Home Flex work without Wi-Fi?
ChargePoint says a configured charger keeps charging on its saved schedule if Wi-Fi drops. Activation and connected features require Wi-Fi, but the installation FAQ says an electrician can set amperage over Bluetooth without it. An unactivated or unconfigured station defaults to 16A. Choose Classic if you want to avoid connected setup altogether; do not assume a Home Flex internet outage stops charging.
Is ChargePoint Home Flex faster than Grizzl-E Classic?
Their NEMA 14-50 plug-in configurations share a 40A ceiling, or 9.6kW at 240V. Home Flex can reach 50A and 12kW only when hardwired with an appropriate installation. Its manual lists 48A output on a 60A circuit and 50A on a 70A circuit. Higher available current helps only if your vehicle can accept it; have a licensed electrician assess the installation.
Are Grizzl-E Classic, Classic Connect and Smart the same?
No. Classic's specification says No Internet Connection. Classic Connect adds Wi-Fi, app scheduling, activity tracking and remote control, with J1772 or NACS connector options. Grizzl-E Smart is another connected model with its own connection guide. A listing that adds Connect or Smart changes the product being compared here; verify the full name and vehicle connector.
Does Grizzl-E Classic have a longer cable than Home Flex?
The linked Classic manual specifies 24 feet for the GR1-14-24 model family, while its current product page advertises 25 feet. Home Flex specifies 23 feet. Confirm the exact Classic unit's supplied cable before relying on the extra reach, especially if your parking layout needs the full advertised length. Plan the actual route to the car with slack rather than choosing by headline length alone.
Is a NEMA 14-50 charger faster than NEMA 6-50?
Neither plug type gives these chargers a higher output ceiling. Both makers offer these supply-plug options, and both chargers top out at 40A in the plug-in comparison. Match the supply plug to an outlet and circuit approved by your electrician. NEMA describes the wall connection; J1772 or NACS describes the vehicle connection. Choose both separately.
