Grizzl-E Classic 40A Level 2 EV Charger (J1772, NEMA 14-50)
Choose for: Best without internet controls
Check before buying: 40A maximum (no 48A hardwired version of the Classic)
Keep the BMW Flexible Fast Charger if you already have the compatible cord, its correct mains adapter and an electrician-approved supply that covers your overnight needs. If you need a permanent smart charger for a confirmed J1772 inlet, our starting pick is the Emporia Classic J1772, with ChargePoint Home Flex for more current-setting choices and Grizzl-E Classic for simple charging without an internet connection. Buy a wall charger to fix reach, controls or installation, or to keep the portable cord in the car.
Quick picks: keep the cord or install a charger?

What is supplied versus optional? BMW's charger manual lists a function box with vehicle connector and mains adapter cable in its scope of delivery, and separately lists optional adapters and a wall kit. That establishes the charger's documented components, not the contents of an individual iX sale. Before buying a duplicate, have the seller show the actual charger, its label and the matching mains leads; have BMW confirm missing original equipment. VIN-specific US iX manuals and complete year-by-year delivery contents remain unverified.
- Yes: Choose the J1772 version after confirming a J1772 vehicle inlet
- Yes: Match the mains adapter or wall plug to the approved supply separately
- Partly: Confirm delivery contents and charger revision with the actual car
- No: Order a NACS version for direct connection to a J1772 inlet
Best first decision: keep the BMW Flexible Fast Charger
Keep it when the equipment is compatible, undamaged, reaches your parking position and restores what you use before departure. BMW's manual identifies EVLBN440KVBSB as the NEMA 14-50, 40A, 240V, 9.6kW mains lead. Buy replacement parts against the charger label; a lead for another revision is not established as interchangeable here.
The same manual's adapter table includes lower-power household leads. Owning the function box alone does not establish that the higher-power mains lead is present. Ask an electrician to assess an existing outlet for sustained charging before making this your permanent arrangement.
Best fixed smart charger: Emporia Classic J1772
Choose the Classic when you want app scheduling, a 25 ft cable and a dedicated wall location. Emporia specifies 48A / 11.5kW hardwired, versus 40A / 9.6kW with its NEMA 14-50 plug, plus a UL 2594 listing and Type 4 indoor/outdoor enclosure. Select J1772 deliberately; Emporia also sells a NACS connector.
Emporia's offline guidance says initial app setup is needed for adjusted rates and automation; saved schedules continue after Wi-Fi loss. Its current lineup distinguishes Classic from Pro with dynamic load management. If panel capacity is the obstacle, ask the installer about a supported load-management system before choosing a charger solely by maximum amps. See our Emporia version guide.
Best for more current settings: ChargePoint Home Flex J1772
Home Flex offers 16A, 24A, 32A, 40A, 48A and 50A settings and a 23 ft cable, with UL/cUL listing. For a new J1772 hardwired installation, the datasheet identifies CPH50-HARDWIRE-L23-K. The separate NACS hardwired model ends in L23-NACS-K; supply plugs and vehicle connectors are separate choices.
Choose a plug-in version only for an approved matching NEMA 14-50 or 6-50 outlet. ChargePoint limits those versions to 32A or 40A. A larger station rating cannot override BMW's published vehicle limit.
The May 2026 installation manual requires a ChargePoint-certified technician using an approved method for warranty coverage, while the installation FAQ says any licensed electrician can install Flex. Get the current warranty requirements confirmed before accepting an installation quote. Our Home Flex variant guide covers the ordering choices.
Best without internet controls: Grizzl-E Classic
Choose the non-connected Classic Black GR1-14-24-PB when you want simple charging from an approved NEMA 14-50 outlet. Its manual specifies 40A / 9.6kW, adjustable lower current limits and UL listing. The product page specifies an aluminum Type 4 enclosure and no internet connection.

Grizzl-E
Grizzl-E Classic 40A Level 2 EV Charger (J1772, NEMA 14-50)
A non-smart, 40A Level 2 home charger in an aluminum UL Type 4 enclosure with a 24-ft J1772 cable, a NEMA 14-50 plug and switchable current limits, made in Canada by United Chargers.
Check package and model options
- 40 A max
- 9.6 kW max
- J1772
Read the naming carefully: Classic Connect is a separate connected product. The Classic page's “Always connected” banner conflicts with its “No Internet Connection” specification. It also advertises 25 ft and “40A 10 kW,” while the model-family manual gives 24 ft and 9.6kW. Confirm the non-connected model and actual cable length. It adds a dedicated wall charger, not more power than the suitable BMW cord in this comparison.
Should you choose BMW's Wallbox instead?
BMW's US Wallbox manual identifies 61 90 5 A1E 1B3 as the US version: 240V, 40A, J1772 and a 25 ft cable. Its output is 9.6kW by calculation, so this documented version offers a fixed location and cable management rather than a speed increase over the suitable BMW cord. Confirm the exact currently offered part, safety listing and compatibility with BMW before ordering; this older manual does not verify every newer product carrying the Wallbox name.
Size charging around your overnight window
Use usable battery capacity × change in charge level ÷ available charging power for an ideal minimum time. This excludes losses and interruptions; reserve extra time rather than treating the result as a promised finish.
For a 2026 xDrive60, use BMW's 113.4kWh usable figure. An assumed 20% to 80% refill needs 113.4kWh × (80% − 20%), or about sixty-eight kilowatt-hours in the battery. The ideal estimate is 113.4 × (80% − 20%) ÷ 9.6, roughly seven hours on the suitable BMW cord. Dividing that energy by 11kW instead gives just over six hours at BMW's published AC ceiling. These are rounded lower bounds; allow extra time for losses or interruptions. Use your own start level and target.
As a separate manufacturer benchmark, BMW lists 0–100% at 11kW as 9:30 for xDrive45 and 10:45 for xDrive60/M70, in hours:minutes. These are BMW's figures for those variants, not empty-to-full promises for the portable cord. If your available window is already shorter than the ideal calculation, a higher-rated station cannot fix the vehicle limit: plan an earlier start or another charging opportunity.
Supply, outdoor parking and handover checklist
Have a licensed electrician assess the supply, panel capacity, approved charging current and outdoor installation; obtain a permit where required. Ask for a quote for the complete usable arrangement, including any outlet work, mounting and cable routing. Do not infer usable charging current from a receptacle's name.
For example, ChargePoint's manual distinguishes 40A charging on a 50A circuit from 48A charging on a 60A circuit. These are manufacturer requirements for the electrician to assess, not instructions to change a breaker. For broader choices, see our Level 2 charger guide.
Trace the cable route with the car in its normal parking position, leaving usable slack. ChargePoint prohibits closing a garage door on the charging cable. For exposed locations, compare the exact product's enclosure and operating limits: its datasheet gives −22°F as the minimum operating temperature, while its May 2026 North American installation manual gives −40°F. Confirm the applicable limit with ChargePoint rather than silently choosing one.
Before a holiday delivery or charger gift, complete these checks:
Identify the car
Confirm model year, trim, inlet and AC limit with BMW.
Inventory the equipment
Have the seller show the charger label, mains leads and any mounting accessories.
Approve the installation
Ask the electrician to confirm the chosen configuration, permitted current, location and commissioning requirements.
Check the order
Match the complete model code and connector; confirm contents, return conditions and arrival timing with the seller.
How we choose
We compare official specifications, connector versions, safety documentation and manuals; we have no physical evaluation results. Published conflicts and gaps in year-specific vehicle or delivery information remain visible. Worksheet estimates use BMW's published capacity and power figures. See how we choose and our disclosure.
Verdict
Keep suitable BMW equipment first. Buy Emporia Classic J1772 for a fixed smart charger, ChargePoint Home Flex J1772 for its range of current settings, or Grizzl-E Classic for charging without internet controls. Confirm the vehicle, supplied kit and installation before ordering: the right charger is the one that reaches the car and restores your daily energy within the available window.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to buy a wall charger for my BMW iX?
Keep a compatible BMW Flexible Fast Charger if you already have it, the correct original mains adapter and an electrician-approved supply that meets your overnight needs. BMW's US charger manual specifies up to 40A and 9.6kW with its NEMA 14-50 adapter. A fixed charger becomes worthwhile for cable reach, app controls, leaving the portable cord in the car or using more of the vehicle's supported AC input.
Will a 50A home charger charge the iX faster than a 48A model?
Do not buy on that distinction alone. BMW publishes an 11kW AC ceiling for the US 2026 iX variants, while ChargePoint rates Home Flex at up to 12kW and Emporia rates Classic at up to 11.5kW. Those are station ratings, not promised vehicle intake. Confirm your exact car's limit and the installer's permitted setting before choosing either station.
Which ChargePoint Home Flex version should I order?
For a confirmed J1772 inlet and a new hardwired installation, select CPH50-HARDWIRE-L23-K. The similar code ending in NACS-K identifies a different vehicle connector. If retaining an approved outlet, match the NEMA 14-50 or NEMA 6-50 supply plug separately; ChargePoint limits those plug-in configurations to 32A or 40A. Neither plug type authorizes the station's maximum hardwired current.
Can I extend the BMW charging cable to reach my parking space?
BMW's Flexible Fast Charger manual prohibits extension cords, cable drums, multiple sockets, travel adapters, timers and vehicle-connector adapters. Choose a permitted location and a cable that reaches without adding them. Before ordering, trace the real route around the parked car and have a licensed electrician assess the supply location. Do not solve a reach problem by assembling an unsupported cable chain.
