    Grizzl-E Classic 40A Level 2 EV Charger (J1772, NEMA 14-50)

Choose for: Physical current settings and app-free charging.

Limit: Match the charger setting, plug and circuit with an electrician; a plug alone does not establish safe current.

For most US VW ID.4 owners, our pick is the J1772 Emporia Classic: a 25-foot cable, app scheduling and the choice of 40A plug-in or 48A hardwired charging. Choose Grizzl-E Classic for operation without an app, or ChargePoint Home Flex J1772 if you want ChargePoint's connected controls.

The ID.4's AC limit matters more than the charger's biggest number. The US vehicle sources below specify 11kW AC; our smart picks offer 40A on an approved 50A circuit, or 48A hardwired on a suitable 60A circuit. A licensed electrician must assess the installation, with a permit where required. Circuit limits, installation requirements.

Home Flex also comes with NEMA 14-50 or 6-50 plugs, both limited to 40A. Its 50A equipment rating does not mean faster ID.4 charging than a suitably configured 48A unit. See the Home Flex variant guide for order codes.

Best overall: Emporia Classic J1772

Emporia's specification sheet lists a 25-foot cable, UL 2594 certification and a watertight NEMA Type 4 enclosure. Select hardwired for up to 48A/11.5kW, or NEMA 14-50 for up to 40A/9.6kW.

The app uses 2.4GHz Wi-Fi. Emporia's offline guidance says essential settings and downloaded schedules remain active without connectivity; app setup is needed to change rates or enable automation. Arrange that setup before depending on a lower current setting.

The box includes the station, vehicle cable, mounting bracket and connector holder, with the selected supply connection. PowerSmart load management needs a Vue monitor and a separate Classic upgrade; charger-only scheduling does not include that system. Ask the electrician about the complete configuration, and see our Emporia variants guide. PowerSmart requirements.

Best without an app: Grizzl-E Classic 40A

Grizzl-E Classic 40A Level 2 EV Charger (J1772, NEMA 14-50)

Grizzl-E

Grizzl-E Classic 40A Level 2 EV Charger (J1772, NEMA 14-50)

Check package and model options

  • 40 A max
  • 9.6 kW max
  • J1772

Choose the non-connected GR1-14-24-PB when you prefer the car to handle scheduling. The manual gives 40A/9.6kW, with installer-configured 32A, 24A or 16A alternatives. The product specifications list an aluminum UL Type 4 enclosure and UL file E510712.

There are real source conflicts: the manual specifies 24 ft for this model family, while the page says 25 ft; the page also labels maximum power 10kW, versus 9.6kW in the manual. Its generic connected-feature banner conflicts with the model's “No Internet Connection” specification. Plan reach around the shorter length and confirm the supplied unit before ordering.

The maker lists the charger, mounting kit and Regular EasyEvPlug holder in the box. Select the matching wall plug: the separate 6-50 option is not a 14-50 plug. VW's quick-start guidance describes vehicle-based scheduling.

Best for ChargePoint app users: Home Flex J1772

For a new hardwired installation, choose CPH50-HARDWIRE-L23-K. Its datasheet specifies a 23-foot J1772 cable, UL/cUL listing and configurable 16A, 24A, 32A, 40A, 48A or 50A output. The ID.4 cannot use its full 12kW equipment rating.

Commissioning matters: ChargePoint says an unactivated, unconfigured Home Flex defaults to 16A. Its installation FAQ allows an electrician to configure amperage through Bluetooth without Wi-Fi; connected features need Wi-Fi. Saved schedules continue if Wi-Fi later drops.

The installation guide lists the station, J1772 cable and mounting parts. The hardwired order has no outlet plug. If reusing an electrician-approved outlet, order its matching 14-50 or 6-50 version instead; those stop at 40A.

Choose by the energy you need to replace and the hours available. For an illustrative 20kWh daily battery refill, assume constant output, a temperate battery and no cabin preconditioning. We borrow the 90% AC charging efficiency assumption from NREL's charging-network model; it is a planning assumption, not measured ID.4 efficiency.

Estimated hours = battery energy needed ÷ (available AC kW × 90%). For example, the daily refill at 32A is 20 ÷ (7.68 × 90%). VW lists 77kWh usable in the cited Pro specifications, so the larger refill below needs 77kWh × (80% − 20%) before losses. Battery capacity.

These estimates explain when extra output matters; they do not promise an overnight result.

Allow more time for cold batteries and cabin preconditioning. Some multi-unit buildings supply 208V, requiring different estimates. VW voltage guidance.

Parking, winter placement and the complete buying checklist

VW locates the charge port on the rear passenger side. Measure the actual cable route in your normal parking position, leaving slack around obstacles. Do not add an extension cord. VW port location, cable planning, extension restriction.

Emporia and Grizzl-E publish operation from -22°F to 122°F. ChargePoint's datasheet gives the same range, but its installation guide gives -40°F to 122°F for North America. Those conflict: obtain confirmation for the exact unit below -22°F. Enclosure ratings alone do not settle temperature suitability. Emporia, Grizzl-E, ChargePoint datasheet and guide.

Use this order before a holiday purchase or gift:

  1. Confirm the car and cable

Select J1772 and measure the route to the rear passenger-side port, with slack.

  2. Confirm the electrical assessment

A licensed electrician checks capacity, location, outlet suitability, permitted output and any required permit before ordering.

  3. Confirm the full order

Match hardwired, NEMA 14-50 or NEMA 6-50; verify the included cable, mount and holder, plus any separately required load-management equipment.

  4. Confirm the first overnight session

Finish app commissioning where needed, check the approved current and choose one scheduling controller while verifying operation.

Start with one schedule, in the car or charger, and verify operation. VW, Emporia and ChargePoint support scheduling. New outlets, hardwiring and panel-monitor installation are electrician work. If capacity is limited, compare a lower setting with a complete load-management configuration. VW, Emporia, ChargePoint.

How we choose

We compared manufacturer documents on November 2, 2026; we haven't physically tested these chargers. We prioritized vehicle compatibility, useful output, cable reach, commissioning and safety listings. Charging estimates use the stated assumptions.

The Lectron NEXUS 40A was considered. Its manual specifies no app or hardware current adjustment, whereas Grizzl-E offers lower configured limits. We favor that flexibility for the app-free pick. For broader shopping, see our home Level 2 charger guide.

Verdict

Buy Emporia Classic J1772 for connected everyday charging, Grizzl-E Classic for simple operation without an app, or Home Flex J1772 for ChargePoint controls. Choose 48A hardware when the approved installation and charging window justify it. Before buying anything, check what you already have: VW says its 2026 ID.4 includes the mobile charge cable, which may meet your routine. VW included equipment.

Frequently asked questions

Does the VW ID.4 need a 48 amp EV charger?

No. VW publishes an 11kW AC ceiling for the US model years covered here. At 240V, a 40A charger supplies up to 9.6kW; 48A hardware can reach the car's ceiling when conditions allow. Choose the higher setting for a shorter charging window or larger daily refill, after an electrician approves the installation. It requires hardwiring for the smart chargers recommended here.

Does the 2026 VW ID.4 use J1772 or NACS at home?

Choose J1772 for home AC charging. VW's current US home-charging guidance specifies J1772 and prohibits unapproved aftermarket adapters. Its genuine NACS DC adapter is exclusively for compatible fast chargers and cannot connect the car to a NACS home charger or Tesla Destination charger. Match both the vehicle connector and the separate supply connection before ordering.

How long does a VW ID.4 take to charge at home?

VW's 2024 US release estimates a full charge at 11kW in approximately six hours and fifteen minutes for the 62kWh models and eight hours for the 82kWh models. These are manufacturer estimates, not a promise for every model year or home installation. Lower available power, temperature, starting charge and battery condition change the result. Daily replenishment usually involves a smaller energy amount than a full charge.

Will these ID.4 chargers work without Wi-Fi?

Grizzl-E Classic has no internet connection. Emporia says its charger retains essential settings and downloaded schedules offline, although setup through its app is required to change rates or enable automation. ChargePoint says saved schedules continue during a Wi-Fi outage; an unconfigured Home Flex defaults to 16A, and its installation FAQ permits electrician configuration through Bluetooth. Confirm setup before relying on an overnight session.

Why is my ID.4 charging slowly on a powerful home charger?

Check the vehicle's charge-current setting and the charger's configured limit first. VW says Reduced limits current to 10 amps, which is about 2.4kW at an assumed 240V. A Home Flex that has not been activated and configured defaults to 16A. Scheduled charging, cold batteries and vehicle power requests can also limit charging. Ask the installer about unexpected circuit limits; do not raise them yourself.
