About thisWATT

Portable power is sold in big numbers: watts, watt-hours, amps and surge. thisWATT turns them into one honest answer: will it run what you need, for as long as you need it?

What thisWATT is

thisWATT is an independent research publication about portable power stations, solar panels and solar generators, home backup batteries, and home EV charging, from Level 2 chargers to NACS and J1772 adapters. Every guide starts from the makers' own documents and ends with a plain answer: which product fits your job, your circuit or your car, and why.

Who it's for

  • People preparing for power outages, from keeping a fridge cold to backing up a whole house.
  • Campers, RV owners and van builders who need power away from the grid.
  • New EV owners setting up home charging, or working out which adapter their car needs.
  • Solar beginners matching panels to a power station.

How we research

We haven't lab-tested the products we cover. Every guide is built from four things, and the full method is on How we choose:

  • Official documents only: spec sheets, user manuals, installation guides and warranty pages, each checked on a stated date.
  • Safety listings, quoted in the maker's own words and explained in plain English.
  • The arithmetic in the open: runtime, circuit size and charging speed worked out step by step and labelled as estimates.
  • Owner-reported patterns only when they're widely documented.

What we don't do

  • We don't sell rankings. No brand can pay for a place in a guide.
  • We don't claim testing we haven't done. When a figure comes from a spec sheet, we say so.
  • We don't show prices, which go stale. The current price is always on the retailer's page.
  • We don't give wiring or installation instructions. Home backup connections and hardwired EV chargers are a licensed electrician's job.

How we're funded

thisWATT earns a commission when you buy through some of our links, including as an Amazon Associate. Commissions never decide a pick, and there are no sponsored posts. The details are in our affiliate disclosure.

Who's behind it

thisWATT is a small, independent research publication. The work is split into research, editing and engineering, and every guide follows the same published method. There are no personalities in front of the products and no invented reviewers: the guides speak for the publication, and every correction goes to one inbox.

Corrections and updates

Spotted a wrong spec? Email us with a link to the maker's page or manual, and we'll check it against the source. When we correct a guide, its Updated date changes, and each guide says when its specs were last checked against the makers' pages.

What we cover

We cover portable power stations, solar generators and panels, home backup batteries, Level 2 and portable EV chargers, EV adapters and power accessories. We don't cover gas generators, systems sold only through installers, or medical equipment. For backup power for a medical device, follow the device maker's guidance.
