Best simple exposed-driveway pick: Grizzl-E Classic

The non-connected GR1-14-24-PB is the straightforward J1772 option: 40A maximum, a UL-listed aluminum enclosure and an included regular EasyEvPlug. The manual permits optional hardwiring; buying the plug-equipped unit does not raise its current ceiling.

Check package and model options

  • 40 A max
  • 9.6 kW max
  • J1772

Two official-source conflicts matter when ordering: the manual specifies 24 ft for this model family and 9.6kW maximum, while the product page says 25 ft and 10kW. Confirm the delivered cable length rather than planning a marginal reach.

The product page also displays generic connected-control wording, but its technical specification says “No Internet Connection.” Choose this Classic for simple charging; check the exact model name if you want app controls.

Outdoor suitability depends on how the connector is stored: the manual warns against upside-down mounting and against leaving the charging gun upside down with its cap on outdoors, where water can collect. Return the connector to EasyEvPlug after charging.

Best hardwired J1772 option: ChargePoint Home Flex

Select J1772 hardwired, CPH50-HARDWIRE-L23-K, for up to 50A / 12kW, with a 23-foot cable and UL/cUL listing. ChargePoint calls hardwiring its best outdoor choice; the plug-in configurations are limited to 32A or 40A output.

Its Type 3R enclosure is outdoor-rated, so shelter is not a requirement merely because its rating differs from Type 4. Resolve the temperature conflict above before a severe-winter purchase.

The installation guide conditions warranty coverage on a ChargePoint-certified technician using an approved method; the installation FAQ says any licensed electrician can install it. Confirm installer eligibility before booking.

See the Home Flex variant selector, then choose J1772 hardwired at ChargePoint.

Best native NACS hardwired option: Home Flex NACS

Select NACS hardwired, CPH50-HARDWIRE-L23-NACS-K, for the family’s 50A ceiling and 23-foot cable, with a factory-supplied NACS holster ball insert. Match the vehicle inlet first, then the supply connection.

Already own a Home Flex and changing cars? ChargePoint offers the CPHCABLE-50A-L23-NACS-KIT, containing a 23-foot, 50A NACS cable and the matching holster insert. Ask your installer whether that supported conversion avoids replacing the whole station.

The conversion instructions say the holster insert cannot be removed once installed. Treat it as an intentional connector change. Have the work assessed under the current installer and warranty requirements.

Choose NACS hardwired at ChargePoint; official conversion-kit specifications.

Best smart charger for a sheltered wall: Emporia Classic

The J1772 Emporia Classic combines 48A / 11.5kW hardwired charging, a 25-foot cable, a Type 4 enclosure and safety certification to UL 2594, file E528156.

The decisive outdoor detail is in its current manual: mount right-side up under cover when possible, and protect the charger from direct freezing rain, snow and prolonged extreme heat. That is why we favor it for a sheltered wall despite the enclosure rating.

The mounting bracket and connector holder are included. The Classic includes time-of-use scheduling; its app and Wi-Fi enable advanced smart features. Solar optimization needs a separately purchased Vue monitor, and PowerSmart dynamic load balancing is a separate upgrade.

The Pro is a different package, bundled with a Vue 3 monitor and PowerSmart. Our Emporia variant guide explains the choice. Before ordering, confirm whether the selected package has the supply plug or is intended for hardwiring.

The complete outdoor package: holder, supply and mounting

Use this as a planning checklist for your licensed electrician, not a mounting procedure. A holder included in the carton still needs an agreed location.

Grizzl-E sells an additional J1772 EasyEvPlug for another location; the supplied regular holder is already the starting package. Official holder details. The Home Flex conversion kit supplies a connector-specific insert, rather than an outdoor pedestal.

No suitable wall within reach? Do not order a universal pedestal on appearance alone. The Grizzl-E manual mentions maker pedestals and bollards, but it does not identify a complete current pedestal kit and foundation package here. Ask the maker and installer to specify the exact approved assembly, site requirements and contents before buying; this guide’s verified packages are wall arrangements.

How to choose an outdoor EV charger

Compare exposure instructions as well as enclosure ratings

NEMA’s Type 3R definition covers rain, sleet and snow; Type 4 adds windblown dust, splashing water and hose-directed water. NEMA says its enclosure types cannot be exactly equated with IEC IP classifications. Keep each published label intact instead of inventing an IP equivalent or treating it as a complete-installation score.

For a plug-in Home Flex outdoors, ChargePoint requires a weatherproof receptacle; its own enclosure rating does not replace that requirement. Grizzl-E also warns against submerging the unit despite its enclosure protection.

Plan the real cable route and winter routine

ChargePoint requires enough slack to reach the vehicle inlet and a cable route that avoids damage or stress. Measure the route around the normally parked car, including the alternate parking direction, rather than a straight line from the wall. Decide where the holder will keep the unplugged connector clear of the walking route and snow-clearing area.

We do not rank these cables by cold-weather flexibility: we have no comparative handling measurements. Ask the maker about the exact cable revision if winter coiling matters to you; operating-temperature permission does not provide a measured flexibility comparison.

Grizzl-E explicitly prohibits an extension cord. If the route fails, change the proposed charger location with your electrician rather than adding reach accessories.

Check the whole exposed system
  1. Charger body

Match the exact enclosure rating and operating limits to the parking location.

  2. Connector at rest

Confirm the supplied holder, its position and a practical cable-storage route.

  3. Supply and support

Have the electrician approve hardwiring or the protected receptacle, wall support and any proposed pedestal.

Hardwired or plug-in: questions for the electrician

Home Flex offers NEMA 6-50 and NEMA 14-50 supply plugs as well as hardwiring; each vehicle-connector choice is available in these supply configurations. Match the approved outlet to the supply plug, and the car inlet to the vehicle connector.

Hardwired EV chargers need a licensed electrician and a permit where required. Ask for a complete installed-system quote covering location, permitted current, supply protection, mounting and commissioning. Confirm the vehicle’s inlet and AC charging limit before paying for more station capacity.

ChargePoint warns that an additional GFCI breaker can cause nuisance trips and recommends hardwiring where local rules require that breaker for plug-in use. Have the electrician resolve the manufacturer instructions with local code; do not remove required protection to stop a trip.

Black Friday: order the complete kit

Before comparing offers, write down the exact model, vehicle connector, supply connection and holder. Ask the seller to confirm the carton contents and warranty eligibility in writing. For a gift, get those choices from the recipient and their installer first.

  • Yes: Exact model and connector named in the order
  • Yes: Correct holder and mounting hardware confirmed in the carton
  • Yes: Seller and installer warranty eligibility confirmed
  • Partly: Similar-looking replacement cable: verify its exact host and kit contents
  • No: A charger-only offer mistaken for a complete installed system

How we choose

We prioritize complete-system exposure, native connector fit, usable cable reach, published operating limits and explicit mounting instructions. The evidence is the linked official manuals, maker specifications and NEMA definitions; unresolved contradictions remain visible. These are specification-based picks, without physical cable-flexibility or winter-use testing. Commissions do not decide the recommendations (disclosure).

Verdict

Choose Grizzl-E Classic for simple exposed-driveway J1772 charging with a planned supply and holder. Choose Home Flex hardwired for native NACS or its J1772 configuration when the extra current is useful, after resolving its temperature and installer conditions. Choose Emporia Classic for a sheltered smart-charging package. If no suitable wall is within reach, settle the approved pedestal package before ordering a charger.

Frequently asked questions

Can an EV charger stay outside in rain and snow?

Yes, when its exact configuration is approved for outdoor use and installed accordingly. Grizzl-E Classic and Emporia Classic have Type 4 enclosures; Home Flex is Type 3R. Those enclosure labels do not settle the supply connection: ChargePoint requires hardwiring or a weather-resistant outdoor outlet. Keep the connector in its prescribed holder, and follow the model-specific exposure instructions.

Is a hardwired EV charger better for an outdoor installation?

For a new outdoor installation, hardwiring is our starting choice, and ChargePoint explicitly recommends it outdoors. Home Flex reaches up to 50A hardwired and Emporia Classic up to 48A; their plug-in configurations stop at 40A. These are station ceilings, not promised vehicle charging rates. Use a licensed electrician and obtain a permit where required.

What is the best outdoor EV charger for very cold weather?

Grizzl-E Classic is our simple J1772 starting pick within its published operating range of −22°F to 122°F. Emporia Classic publishes the same range. Home Flex documents conflict: its datasheet says −22°F minimum, while its North American installation guide says −40°F. Obtain written confirmation for the exact unit before relying on that lower limit; we do not recommend any of these unconditionally below −22°F.

Is NEMA Type 4 the same as an IP rating?

No. NEMA says its enclosure types cannot be exactly equated with IEC classifications because the tests differ. Its Type 4 definition includes windblown dust, splashing water and hose-directed water; Type 3R covers rain, sleet and snow. Compare the published rating alongside the charger manual, connector storage and supply protection instead of substituting an IP label.

Do I need a separate outdoor holster or pedestal?

For the wall packages here, start with the supplied connector storage: EasyEvPlug for Grizzl-E, the integrated holster for Home Flex, and the wall-mounted holder for Emporia. The NACS Home Flex needs its matching holster insert. If no suitable wall is within cable reach, have the installer obtain an exact manufacturer-approved pedestal package before ordering; a universal stand is not our verified recommendation.
