For series vs parallel solar panels, start with the receiving device: series adds voltage, while parallel adds current, and both must stay within its published limits. Our station pick is the EcoFlow DELTA 3 Plus for its separate solar inputs; for a documented small parallel array, consider its maker's 110W Lightweight panel pair. If you already own a station, use the worksheet below before buying another panel.

What series and parallel actually change

For identical panels under the same conditions, add Voc and Vmp in series, or Isc and Imp in parallel. In series, current stays that of one matching panel; in parallel, voltage stays that of one matching panel. Rated panel watts add in either arrangement, but the station's limits and sunlight decide the charging power you actually receive.

Careful: when calculating the number of panels that can be used in series, make sure to take both its Open circuit voltage (Voc) and its Temperature coefficient into account. At ambient temperatures below 25°C, the Voc will be higher.

Shade, distance and mixed panels: Victron says a shaded panel can reduce a whole series string's output, while parallel handles shade better but needs cable suitable for the higher current. Its mixed-module explanation also warns about current mismatch in series and voltage mismatch in parallel. Prefer matching panels; compare the maker-approved cable options for your required distance rather than assuming a splitter improves output.

Station pick: EcoFlow DELTA 3 Plus

The DELTA 3 Plus manual specifies 11–60V, 15A and 500W per solar input, with 1,000W combined. Its compatibility warning explicitly uses total panel Voc and total Isc. That gives you a useful expansion choice: evaluate separate panel groups against separate inputs rather than trying to feed the combined wattage into one port.

  • 1,024 Wh capacity
  • 1,800 W AC out

EcoFlow names its Solar to XT60i Charging Cable for this station. Match the Plus name: the Lightweight panel's compatibility table lists the plain DELTA 3 at 500W and the Plus at two 500W inputs. A panel bundle also needs its exact panel model and quantity checked; a station-only specification does not identify what a seller's kit includes.

Documented array pick: EcoFlow 110W Lightweight pair

EcoFlow's EF-FOLD-110-LW manual explicitly lists two panels, series/parallel, for DELTA 3 Plus. Its main section recommends parallel, and its named XT60i In-Parallel Adapter is sold separately. This is a model-specific recommendation; it does not approve two panels of any wattage.

There is a wording conflict: the same manual's FAQ recommends series and then immediately says parallel is recommended. We retain the explicit table's supported count and the main section's parallel preference, flagging the contradiction rather than treating the FAQ as a universal rule.

Here is the input screen for that pair and the larger NextGen 220W Bifacial. EcoFlow lists the latter's front-side Voc as 21.5V and Isc as 12.4A; these are not a complete bifacial worst-case rating.

Variant trap: the 110W Lightweight model has an XT60i connector; the NextGen 220W Bifacial page lists an XT60i charging cable and separate front/rear ratings. Its Original-versus-NextGen comparison covers a family of panels. Use the dedicated electrical specification table for the actual panel, and do not substitute an original or monofacial panel's data.

Check Voc, operating voltage and current separately

Voc is the voltage ceiling check. Use array open-circuit voltage, adjusted for cold and documented tolerances. Vmp is the operating-voltage check: read the receiver's startup/MPPT requirement too. For example, Victron's 100/30 needs PV voltage above battery voltage by 5V to start and by 1V thereafter; a nominal panel label alone cannot establish that fit.

Isc and Imp serve different checks. Isc is short-circuit current; Imp is current at maximum power. Compare the current type the receiving manual actually specifies. DELTA 3 Plus expressly limits array Isc to 15A, so an assertion that the station will simply clip excess operating current does not clear an oversized parallel array.

Watts are another limit, per input. Victron explicitly permits its controller to limit excess PV power, subject to its other limits; that permission cannot be transferred to every power station. For a separate battery, the SmartSolar 100/30 has a 100V PV Voc ceiling and 35A PV Isc ceiling. Its 30A battery charge rating is a different quantity. See solar charge controllers for that buying decision.

Cold-weather voltage: a worked selection check

Victron warns that Voc rises below 25°C and requires the panel's voltage temperature coefficient when checking series count. A linear estimate, using a coefficient expressed in percent per degree, is: cold array Voc ≈ series count × panel Voc × [1 + (coefficient magnitude ÷ 100) × (25 − minimum design temperature)]. Apply published voltage tolerances and the maker's required design allowances as well.

For the 110W Lightweight, the documented Voc is 23.5V and its Voc coefficient is −0.25%/°C. For two in series at an illustrative panel temperature of 0°C, nominal arithmetic is 2 × 23.5V × [1 + (0.25 ÷ 100) × (25 − 0)] ≈ 50V, rounded. That is below DELTA 3 Plus's 60V ceiling, but leaves essentially no margin on a 50V receiver. This is a voltage estimate, not an approval: use your actual lowest design temperature and obtain any missing tolerance allowance.

The SolarSaga 200 JS-200E sheet also supplies a voltage coefficient: −(0.27 ±0.03)%/°C, alongside Voc 22V ±5%. Account for both tolerances; its power coefficient is a separate number. For the NextGen 220W Bifacial, the cited US specification table supplies no Voc coefficient. Keep its winter series proposal unresolved instead of borrowing either of these coefficients.

Jackery owners: identify JS-200E before buying accessories

The JS-200E manual describes a multifunctional charging cable and DC8020 connector. Jackery's broader connection guide separately lists JS-200A, JS-200C and JS-200D. A shared SolarSaga 200 name therefore does not establish interchangeable accessories or electrical ratings.

Explicit unsupported case: this guide does not approve a JS-200E pair on DELTA 3 Plus through an unspecified adapter. Jackery restricts its multifunctional cable to JS-200E, and lists a 60V maximum system voltage for that panel. A voltage calculation alone cannot establish adapter suitability or override the panel's own limit. Use the exact Jackery-supported panel/station accessory combination, or obtain a model-specific cross-brand confirmation.

Compatibility worksheet for adding another panel

Fill this out for each input. For matching panels, series count multiplies panel voltage; parallel string count multiplies string current. A series-parallel proposal needs both checks, with matching strings. Leave an unknown blank and treat the result as pending rather than guessing.

How to calculate solar panel size: divide the daily energy you need to replace in Wh by your location's seasonal peak-sun-hours for an initial wattage estimate, then account for losses and recovery needs. Peak-sun-hours describe equivalent full-strength sunlight, not hours of daylight. Victron's sizing explanation uses this method. Pass the electrical worksheet independently; a larger wattage target does not authorize more panels on an input.

Verdict

Choose DELTA 3 Plus if separate solar inputs suit your expansion plan. Its maker's 110W Lightweight pair is the documented small-array option here, with a separately purchased parallel adapter. For a second NextGen 220W Bifacial on one DELTA 3 Plus input, reject parallel: 2 × 12.4A front-side Isc already exceeds 15A. Its cited US sheet omits the Voc temperature coefficient, so keep winter series use pending the maker's coefficient or written approval for the exact array, input and lowest design temperature. For any mixed-brand pair, finish the cold-voltage, current and accessory checks first. Buy the array that clears the worksheet, not the bundle with the largest wattage headline.

Frequently asked questions

Is series or parallel better for solar panels on a power station?

Choose the arrangement that fits the exact input. Series adds voltage while keeping the current of an identical panel; parallel adds current while keeping panel voltage. Series can help meet a controller's minimum voltage, while parallel can handle uneven shade better. Neither arrangement increases the sum of the panels' rated watts. Check cold Voc and the maker's specified current limit before buying.

Can I use two 200W solar panels on one input?

Their combined rating is 400W, but that alone does not establish compatibility. Series adds their open-circuit voltages; parallel adds their short-circuit currents. For example, the SolarSaga 200 JS-200E lists Voc of 22V ±5% and Isc of 12.5A ±5% at STC, with higher bifacial current. The receiving input, cold-weather allowance and exact approved cable still decide whether a pair is suitable.

What if the solar panel has no voltage temperature coefficient?

Ask its manufacturer for the coefficient or written approval for the exact array, receiving device and lowest design temperature. A room-temperature voltage calculation cannot clear a winter series array because Voc rises in cold conditions. Do not borrow a coefficient from a similarly named panel or substitute the power temperature coefficient. Keep the proposed combination unresolved until the missing data is supplied.

Can I mix solar panels with different wattages?

It needs a specific compatibility review. Victron explains that mismatched modules in series are constrained by the lower current, while parallel combinations can lose power through mismatched voltages and complicate maximum-power tracking. Buy matching models for a straightforward expansion. Equal wattage, similar-looking connectors or the same brand name alone do not establish an approved mixed array.
