Sources: Renogy Rover 2 manual, version A2, Victron specifications, features and accessories, and current Victron model codes.

Voltage revision check: Victron's introduction also lists 36V, while its auto-select specification table lists 12V, 24V and 48V. Confirm hardware and configuration before buying for 36V; this guide's equivalent kits are for 12V/24V batteries. A listing labelled only 12V/24V needs its own model verification. The up-to-48V model lists 1,160W nominal PV power at 48V, but its 48V load output is only 1A; that is separate from its 20A charging rating.

Renogy Rover 2 20A: best for the built-in screen

Rover 2 is our pick for buyers who want to read charging information at the controller and use a phone without adding a separate display. Its manual shows an LCD and buttons, direct Renogy App pairing, and Bluetooth/RS-485 communication. Lithium system voltage requires manual selection; automatic voltage detection applies to non-lithium batteries.

For a lead-acid kit, the manual lists a temperature sensor in the box and describes temperature compensation. That reduces the accessory shopping list, although Renogy cautions that package contents can vary by model. Confirm the selected package rather than assuming a photograph shows everything supplied.

The purchase limitation is lithium sensing: do not count that probe as protection for an LFP battery with a BMS. Buy this kit only once the battery's own cold-charge behavior is documented for your intended conditions.

Victron SmartSolar 100/20: best for external battery sensing

Our Victron kit starts with the controller and Smart Battery Sense long range, SBS050150200. The sensor sends battery voltage and temperature over Bluetooth using VE.Smart Networking. If you already own a BMV-712 Smart or SmartShunt with the supported BMV temperature sensor, the controller manual allows that as the temperature source instead; avoid buying duplicate sensing hardware.

SmartSolar's built-in Bluetooth provides VictronConnect monitoring and settings without a Bluetooth dongle. Its internal temperature sensor estimates battery temperature for compensation, but the manual identifies that as an estimate. An actual battery-temperature reading requires the external sensing path.

The app-oriented kit is our recommendation when external sensing matters more than an included screen. Add the MPPT Control display and its cable only if a separate numerical display matters to you.

See the SmartSolar controller and Smart Battery Sense.

Cold-charge protection: the sensor changes the decision

Renogy's manual needs careful reading. Its low-temperature inhibit function is disabled by default and requires the battery-temperature sensor. However, the same manual restricts that sensor to lead-acid batteries and says not to use it on an LFP battery equipped with a BMS. Its later statement that LFP batteries with a BMS have cold protection is generic; require confirmation from your actual battery maker before relying on it.

Victron makes the external-sensor requirement explicit. Low-temperature cutoff works only with a received battery-temperature reading over VE.Smart Networking, and the setting is disabled by default. When enabled, the default threshold is 5°C, but Victron says to confirm the appropriate threshold with the lithium battery supplier. Neither the controller's ambient operating range nor its internal overtemperature protection proves the battery is safe to charge.

Smart Battery Sense itself is rated for −10°C to +60°C operation. If your battery compartment can fall outside that range, request a supported sensing plan for those conditions before buying the winter kit.

For the wider battery decision, use our 12V LiFePO4 solar guide. Require the supplier to verify charging parameters and temperature protections for the selected battery; this comparison does not provide installation instructions.

The MPPT Control cable is not included; a wall enclosure is optional for buyers who cannot use a flush panel mount. The similarly named SmartSolar Control plug-in display supports a different controller list, starting with the listed SmartSolar 150/45 range, and does not list this 100/20. Use the accessory explicitly identified in the 100/20 manual.

MPPT Control and GX monitoring both use VE.Direct, so have the dealer quote a supported display arrangement if you want both. For GX systems, Victron's documents need care: the Smart Battery Sense introduction broadly excludes Color Control GX/Venus GX systems, while its VE.Smart limitations allow a GX used only for logging. Have the dealer confirm the sensing and control plan for your system.

Ask for compatible panels, battery, cabling, protective devices and mounting hardware in the same quote. Renogy requires qualified personnel for installation and service; use the installer to settle the complete electrical design.

Match the array and battery before ordering

Renogy calls its 300W/600W figures maximums and instructs buyers not to exceed that table. Victron labels 290W/580W nominal and explicitly permits power limiting when more PV power is connected. Those labels do not establish a measured energy advantage for either controller.

Victron also requires PV voltage above battery voltage by 5V to start, then 1V to continue. A battery-voltage match alone therefore cannot establish that a panel is suitable. Both controllers' published 100V Voc and 20A array short-circuit limits need independent checks.

Purchase checks before choosing either kit
  1. Confirm the battery

Match system voltage, charging parameters and the battery's permitted charging current.

  2. Check winter PV voltage

Require cold-corrected array Voc below the published 100V ceiling.

  3. Check array current

Compare total array short-circuit current with the separate 20A PV limit.

  4. Check power wording

Renogy publishes maximum PV watts; Victron publishes nominal watts with power limiting.

Victron warns that panel Voc rises below 25°C and says to account for the panel's temperature coefficient. Request a cold-weather calculation for the planned array rather than choosing by panel watts or a connector match.

Expansion has conditions. Renogy requires same-model controllers and independent solar arrays for parallel mode; it documents up to 25 controllers but recommends 16 or fewer. Victron limits a VE.Smart Network to 10 devices, including sensing devices, and each charger retains its own current setting. Networking does not raise an individual controller's voltage or current rating; the battery's charging limit still governs the proposed system.

Winter and Black Friday buying check

Before checkout, confirm the selected amperage, exact generation and model code, current manual, included probe, display cable and remote-monitoring extras. Require a battery-specific cold-charge plan. Keep the named Rover 2 and SmartSolar revisions on the quote; do not let a promotion substitute an unspecified Rover, BlueSolar or a display intended for larger controllers.

How we choose

We compare manufacturer manuals, datasheets, model-code lists and accessory compatibility. Recommendations reflect the usable kit, battery-temperature requirements and monitoring preferences, rather than an unsupported claim that either brand harvests more energy. We have not physically tested these controllers. Unresolved revision or battery-protection questions remain purchase checks. Commissions never decide a pick (disclosure).

Verdict

Buy Rover 2 20A for a straightforward 12V/24V kit with an onboard screen, after confirming the battery's protection requirements. Buy SmartSolar 100/20 plus Smart Battery Sense when external temperature sensing and configurable cold-charge cutoff matter most; add MPPT Control and its cable only for a separate display. Keep a compatible temperature-equipped battery monitor you already own instead of automatically adding another sensor. The winning purchase is the complete, supported kit for your battery and array.

Frequently asked questions

Is Renogy Rover 2 or Victron SmartSolar 100/20 better?

Choose Rover 2 for a 12V or 24V system where an onboard LCD and direct phone monitoring are priorities. Choose SmartSolar 100/20 with Smart Battery Sense when measured battery temperature and configurable cold-charge cutoff decide the purchase. Both charge at up to 20A. Our recommendation compares complete accessory kits, based on manufacturer documents rather than field testing.

Does Rover 2 protect a lithium battery from cold charging?

Do not assume its included probe provides that protection. Renogy describes a sensor-dependent charge-inhibit function, but expressly restricts the probe to lead-acid batteries and prohibits using it on an LFP battery with a BMS. For that lithium setup, require the battery maker to confirm its own cold-charge protection. A generic reference to a BMS is insufficient purchase evidence.

Is the Victron SmartSolar 100/20 only for 12V and 24V batteries?

The up-to-48V revision covered here is SCC110020160R. Its specification table lists automatic selection of 12V, 24V or 48V. Victron's introduction also names 36V, which is absent from that auto-select table; confirm the exact hardware and configuration with Victron before buying for that voltage. Treat a listing labelled only 12V/24V as a revision to verify, rather than borrowing this record's ratings.

Which display fits the SmartSolar MPPT 100/20?

The controller manual explicitly supports the external MPPT Control display through VE.Direct. Add the separately purchased VE.Direct cable and, if needed, a wall enclosure. The similarly named SmartSolar Control plug-in display has a different supported-controller list that excludes the 100/20. For phone monitoring alone, SmartSolar already has built-in Bluetooth and uses VictronConnect.

Can the SmartSolar 100/20 use more than 290W of panels?

Victron calls 290W at 12V and 580W at 24V nominal PV power, and says excess connected PV power is limited. That permission does not waive the 100V open-circuit ceiling or 20A PV short-circuit limit. Have the proposed array checked against every limit, including cold-weather voltage, before ordering. Renogy instead instructs buyers not to exceed its maximum-power table.
