Keep a working Tesla Mobile Connector if its 32A ceiling covers your overnight charging; buy Grizzl-E Mini Connect NACS when you can use 40A or need its supplied TT-30 adapter. Mini is our new-kit pick for that wider outlet coverage, while Tesla's automatic adapter recognition makes it the simpler choice when its current is sufficient.
Quick picks and comparison
- Choose Mini Connect NACS for its higher output, supplied RV-outlet option and charger-side scheduling, provided you will check the current at each destination.
- Keep or choose Tesla Mobile Connector for a lighter cord and automatic adapter current selection. A working Gen 2 already has the same maximum charging current as the documented Gen 3.

Best new kit for 40A or TT-30 travel: Grizzl-E Mini Connect NACS
{{product:}}
Select Mini Connect with the NACS vehicle connector on the manufacturer's order page. J1772 is a separate selection, and the page's displayed default SKU names J1772. The download page also separates Mini Connect from Mini Original; use the Connect instructions for this comparison.
The base NEMA 14-50 plug and four supplied adapters cover a useful itinerary without assembling an extra adapter order. The storefront also lists a soft carrying case, mounting cradle and EasyEvPlug. Its advantage is the particular connections supplied, especially TT-30, rather than adapter count alone.
The tradeoff is responsibility for current selection. Mini detects voltage, not circuit amperage. Its manual specifies a 40A maximum setting at higher voltage and a 12A maximum setting at lower voltage, with a separate TT-30 mode. Verify the supply and set an appropriate limit before charging; do not expect changing the plug adapter to identify the circuit's safe current.
Best when 32A is enough: Tesla Mobile Connector
{{product:}}
Keep a sound Gen 2 cord if it already fits your outlets and charging window. Tesla's newer Gen 2 manual and Gen 3 manual both specify 32A, 20 ft with adapter installed and 5.2 lb. Gen 3 does not turn this into a 40A charger.
For a fresh order, confirm the actual generation and require the cord plus genuine Tesla 5-15 and 14-50 input adapters; check whether a carrying bag is supplied. The Gen 2 manual warns that some manufacture dates omit the 14-50 adapter. For replacement adapters, select the exact outlet and confirm compatibility with your connector generation through Tesla's charging catalog.
Tesla automatically detects its attached adapter and sets current draw. That is useful when changing destinations, though it does not establish that an unfamiliar outlet is sound. Both newer manuals describe NACS battery-electric vehicle use; the older US Gen 2 PDF says Tesla vehicles only. Match documentation to your unit and check your car's AC charging requirements.
Will 40A actually finish the overnight job sooner?
Use the lowest of the car's AC limit, the charger limit and the verified supply limit. A car capped at 32A gains no charging-current advantage from Mini. On a suitable 50A circuit with a car that accepts the extra current, Mini can use its 40A ceiling. Grizzl-E's manual limits charging to 80% of the circuit rating. If the verified circuit is only 40A, that caps Mini at 32A, matching Tesla.
Here is an ideal estimate, using the makers' rounded power figures and a hypothetical refill of 30 kilowatt-hours:
Energy needed ÷ charging power
- Tesla at its maximum
- 30 ÷ 7.6
- Mini at its maximum
- 30 ÷ 9.6
Ideal charging time
- Tesla at its maximum
- About four hours
- Mini at its maximum
- A little over three hours

Both fit a hypothetical eight-hour stop. Mini matters more when your usable window is tight or your refill is larger. These estimates exclude charging losses and battery heating or cooling; Tesla specifically notes that battery and ambient temperature affect charging time. Allow margin and check the car's own completion estimate. At a lower-rated outlet, the following table replaces the headline current comparison.
The complete outlet-adapter order for your trip
These are wall-outlet input adapters, separate from the NACS connector that plugs into the car. Use the manufacturer's documented adapter, a suitable dedicated supply and a current limit within every applicable rating. Have a licensed electrician verify an unfamiliar supply; any new outlet installation belongs with a licensed electrician and a permit where required.

The Mini manual and Tesla charging-rate tables support these orders. Tesla's Gen 3 manual separately describes a Powershare outlet adapter for powering devices; that is a different function from the 5-20 charging input adapter.
For TT-30, Grizzl-E's firmware announcement says the higher-current feature arrived in a firmware update. Enable the documented 120 V Adapter 30 A mode only for the appropriate supply; it permits up to 24A. Check firmware before departure and confirm your vehicle accepts that low-voltage current. Avoid building either itinerary around an undocumented conversion adapter. Tesla's manual also prohibits private power generators.
Scheduling and charging when Wi-Fi disappears
Mini supports remote controls over 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, plus local controls through its own Wi-Fi network without internet. Its manual says Grizzl-E Connect settings override local settings. Learn local access before traveling, check the current limit again at the destination, and review any existing schedule or stop limit if a session does not start. Local schedules have their own system-time setting; check it when changing time zones.
Tesla's plug-in procedure does not require charger Wi-Fi setup. Scheduling can live in the vehicle: the Model 3 owner's manual provides touchscreen scheduling and saves schedules by location. Check your model's instructions and destination schedule rather than buying Mini solely to obtain scheduled charging. For either cord, confirm charging has started before walking away.
Cable reach, winter use and replacement support
Use the published lengths for planning, then confirm the actual outlet-to-port reach without strain. Tesla explicitly forbids extension cords and conversion plugs; Grizzl-E's warranty excludes third-party extension cords and electrical adapters. Enclosure ratings do not override wet-weather instructions: Tesla warns against use in severe rain or snow and against a submerged or snow-covered outlet.
Mini's weight and power discrepancies remain unresolved: the storefront does not explain its difference from the manual. Do not assume the heavier figure is a shipping weight. Tesla's manuals do not itemize a fully loaded adapter bag either. For carrying comparisons, request the exact packed configuration's weight rather than subtracting these figures as though both describe identical kits.
Mini offers 3-year or 5-year EVSE warranty selections, but its current replacement policy gives the charging cable one year. Keep the invoice and start through United Chargers support; replacement components require authorized service. Do not assume the longer EVSE term covers cable wear.
Tesla's charging-equipment warranty covers separately purchased Mobile Connectors and charging adapters for 12 months, subject to its terms. Equipment supplied with a new vehicle has a different coverage route. Its manuals direct repairs to Tesla. Compare the complete replacement order: cord, required genuine input adapters, carrying arrangement and applicable warranty, rather than the cord alone.

How we choose
This comparison uses official product pages, North America manuals and warranty terms. We separate connector generations, adapter circuit labels and permitted charging current, and retain unresolved maker contradictions. Calculations are illustrative estimates; safety listings are reported only as documented. A Type 4X enclosure entry alone does not establish a UL/ETL listing. For broader alternatives, see our portable EV charger guide; for a permanent home setup, see Tesla Mobile Connector vs Wall Connector.
Verdict
Keep Tesla if 32A already gets the car ready by departure. Choose Mini Connect NACS for usable 40A output or its documented TT-30 option, accepting the need to manage current limits. Buy the approved adapters your actual route requires and match the instructions to the exact generation you receive.
Frequently asked questions
Is Tesla Mobile Connector a 40 amp NACS portable charger?
No. Tesla's North America Gen 2 and Gen 3 manuals specify 32A maximum, including with the NEMA 14-50 adapter. Grizzl-E Mini Connect NACS is the 40A option here, rated at 9.60kW on a suitable 50A circuit. That extra capacity helps only when the electrical supply and the car's AC charging limit both permit it; a car limited to 32A cannot use the higher ceiling.
Can Grizzl-E Mini Connect charge from an RV TT-30 outlet?
Its supplied TT-30 adapter supports up to 24A at 120V when the dedicated mode is enabled and the supply is suitable. Ordinary low-voltage detection defaults to 12A, so the adapter alone does not unlock that higher limit. Grizzl-E documents the feature as a firmware addition. Check the current manual, firmware and vehicle's AC acceptance before depending on it. Tesla's cited North America adapter tables do not list TT-30.
Can I use either portable charger without campground Wi-Fi?
Mini Connect's manual provides local controls through the charger's own Wi-Fi network, explicitly without an internet connection; Grizzl-E Connect settings can override those local settings. Tesla's charging procedure requires no charger Wi-Fi setup. For a Model 3, scheduling is available on the vehicle touchscreen as well as in the app. Before leaving either setup unattended, check the current limit, schedule and actual charging status at the destination.
Will Tesla Mobile Connector charge a non-Tesla NACS car?
Tesla's newer North America Gen 2 and Gen 3 manuals describe charging battery electric vehicles using NACS, including Teslas except Roadster. The older US Gen 2 PDF instead says Tesla vehicles only, so match the instructions to your actual unit and confirm your vehicle maker's AC charging guidance. Grizzl-E also sells separate NACS and J1772 versions; choose the vehicle connector explicitly rather than assuming the outlet adapter changes it.
